Any injury to the ligaments in the thumb can prevent a person from being able to grasp things. A serious enough thumb ligament injury and a person may require surgery to treat it. The thumb may be sore and weak for a while after the surgery, but after several weeks of therapy, the muscles and ligaments can be built back up to normal. When it is fully healed, a person will be able to grasp things normally again.
