The history of tattooing dates way back to the Neolithic period, and is said to be initially a Eurasian practice. Studies show that tattoos were started by Otzi the Iceman, when he was discovered having about 60 tattoos on different parts of his body. Later on, mummies were also discovered to have tattoos on their bodies as well. In various parts of the world such as in Japan or in America, tattooing has been said to date back to the Paleolithic period. Depending on the culture, various methods of tattooing were also practiced such as hand-pricking with dye or rubbing of the wounds with ashes.
